🏗️ Plan Blog Content Like a Construction Project

And why every mom blogger needs a blueprint before building her dream blog

Hey mama, real talk?
Starting a blog while juggling motherhood feels a bit like building a house during a hurricane. Kids crying, dishes multiplying, brain fog swirling — and there you are, staring at a blank WordPress screen thinking, “Where do I even start?”

I’ve been there.

Now, after nearly two decades in the construction world as a Quantity Surveyor (basically the person who makes sure buildings stay on budget and don’t fall apart), I realized something wild:

The same project planning that goes into construction?
It works beautifully for blogging, too.

Let me show you how I plan my blog content like a construction project — and how this approach might just be the clarity boost you need to finally start (and stick with) your blog.

🧱 Step 1: The Site Visit — Check Your Foundation

Before any construction begins, we visit the site. We look at the land, spot the risks, and figure out what we’re working with.

Blog version? This is your “What am I doing with my life?” moment.

Here’s what I ask myself each month:

  • Who am I writing for? (Moms? Side hustlers? Burned-out professionals?)
  • What’s happening in their life right now?
  • What do I want to share from my own story that could help?

🔍 Why it matters:
Because starting without clarity is like pouring cement on soft mud — it all sinks.
A strong blog starts with knowing your purpose and people.

📐 Step 2: Draw the Masterplan — AKA the Content Calendar

No builder shows up to a site with just vibes.

They’ve got plans. Schedules. A whole freaking blueprint.

So I treat my blog the same way. I map out my content in my Construction Content Planner — a simple, printable system that saves my sanity.

Here’s what goes in:

  • Categories (Parenting, Emotions, Side Hustles, etc.)
  • Blog titles & themes
  • Posting schedule
  • Keyword focus (yes, we Google strategically here!)
  • Any freebies, products, or emails tied to the post

🧠 Why it matters:
Because without a plan, blogging turns into chaotic journaling with zero growth.
With a plan? It’s like building a house that doesn’t leak.

🛠️ Step 3: Gather Your Tools — Blog Resource Prep

Every contractor has a toolbox. So do I. But instead of drills and screwdrivers, I’ve got:

  • ChatGPT (hi, partner!) for drafting and brainstorming
  • Canva for visuals and Pinterest pins
  • Google Sheets to track keywords and blog stats
  • GravityWrite for snappy content shortcuts
  • WordPress to house it all

👷‍♀️ Why it matters:
Trying to build a blog without tools is like baking without an oven — painful and pointless. The right tools make things easier, faster, and prettier.

📅 Step 4: Set a Build Schedule — Weekly Workflow

In construction, we’ve got a site progress chart. In blogging, I’ve got a weekly rhythm:

DayTask
MonBrain dump + keyword idea
TueDraft blog post
WedEdit & design visuals
ThuUpload to WordPress
FriPromote on social + Pinterest
SatOptional reel or email
SunNetflix + guilt-free rest

💡 Why it matters:
This keeps me from waking up in a panic at 2 a.m. like, “Did I publish my blog this week?!” (Been there. Regret it.)

Step 5: Final Inspection — Publish & Promote

Before we hand over any building project, we do a final check. Same for blog posts:

  • Spelling & grammar = ✅
  • Links working = ✅
  • Images optimized = ✅
  • SEO tags filled = ✅
  • Email opt-ins set = ✅

📣 Then I hit Publish… and get the word out!

📎 Bonus: My Add-On Pages (These Save My Brain)

Think of these like the storage room where I keep all the extras:

  • Blog Post Tracker – What’s done, what’s next
  • Keyword Sheet – Helps with SEO so people actually find my blog
  • Visual Plan – What images I need, what Canva templates I’ll use
  • Promotion Page – Pinterest captions, social media blurbs
  • Monthly Reflection – What worked, what flopped, what to fix

These aren’t “extra.” These are mental health tools.

💬 Final Word: Why a Content Planner Will Save You

Mama, hear me.

You don’t need to be a QS, a tech whiz, or a 6-figure blogger to do this.
You just need a system that takes the chaos in your brain and turns it into calm action.

That’s what a content planner does.

It doesn’t just help you write blog posts.
It helps you think clearly, stay consistent, and build something you’re proud of — one post at a time.

If you’re tired of feeling stuck, scattered, or “not ready,” this is your sign.
